Colonic Hydrotherapy - not currently available

While all the body's systems play important roles in maintaining good health, but it all starts with the gastro-intestinal (GI) system. A healthy GI tract allows us to take in food and drink, and breaks it down to the nutrients that we need and expelling what we don't, with the assisance of other organs. This fundamental role is vital to maintain any level of good health and on which all other bodily systems depend on it doing it's job efficiently. Ensuring that there is sufficient resources for energy and to heal and repair cells & tissues as they break down and to eliminate the waste substances that are toxic to the body above a certain level.

The lowly colon or large intestine is the latter part of the GI system, which has until fairly recently been largely overlooked by the medical system. Of late there has been increasing scientific research into bowel flora - the bacteria and yeasts that live in the colon and small intestine that assist the digestive process and therefore our health. More about bowel flora later.

Constipation or a sluggish bowel means that the liver has to work harder to filter out more of the toxic substances from the blood circulation. While some may be told that opening their bowels only a few times a week is 'normal' for them, one shouldn't confuse 'normal' with what is actually healthy. A 'normal' lifestyle in the developed world is high in processed food and low on exercise, but that doesn't mean it's a healthy lifestyle.

Laxatives and other GI 'medicines' are the biggest selling 'over the counter' medicines in the western world. Even some of the more natural of these work on the basis of irritating the gut wall, with the response of the gut to try and expell it as soon as possible.

So What is a Healthy Bowel Habit?

1 to 3 movements of firm-ish, but light stools, but what is also important is what it called transit time. This is the time it takes from food in mouth to waste exiting the other end. Too fast in the case of diarrohea, then little gets chance to be absorbed and water is expelled with the stool instead of being reclaimed by the colon. Too long a transit time, then liver and kidneys needs to work harder to deal with the excess toxicity of the matter that would otherwise be passed out. A healthy transit time is considered to be 8 - 14 hours. This you can test by eating something that is non toxic, but indigestible i.e. some whole corn kernals without chewing, flax/linseeds or tomato seeds. You need to take as many as to be distiguishable in the stool and should have avoided these foods for about a week prior to testing. You then wait for them to reappear.

in the colon that

Colon health is an area of great interest to medical science

becoming exceedingly important; colon related diseases are some of the most prevalent diseases among society today. Colon health is dependent on the maintenance of beneficial intestinal bacteria and proper elimination. Colon therapy is a form of healthcare that in theory restores the function of the colon. Colon therapy refers to flushing water through the entire length of the colon or large intestine.

The therapy exercises colon muscles and helps reshape the colon and stimulates reflex points in the colon that relate to other body organs (similar to reflexology). A colon therapy session with colonic irrigation wirral is used for cleansing, however there are many other benefits. And based on the type of high fat/low fibre diet most people typically follow, there seems no time more than the present that colonic therapy might be appropriate. Proper colon health is a very important part of a healthy body.

Colonic Hydrotherapy is the safest, gentlest and most effective method yet discovered of clearing out toxic substances waste material, faecal matter, gas and mucous that may have become trapped in the colon (large bowel) and present in conditions such as Bloating, Constipation, IBS, Thrush, Allergies, Skin eruptions to name just a few.

Colonic hydrotherapy works by the use of repeated gentle flowing and releasing of warm filtered purified water under low gravity pressure. The therapist will also use special abdominal massage techniques to assist the cleansing process. A relaxing inner detoxifying experience that can only be described as a wonderful internal warm bath.

After your treatment you will have further consultation in which your therapist can advise you in ways to improve your diet and lifestyle. Recommendations/Diet sheets will be offered according to what may be beneficial for you.

Following advised treatments, combined with lifestyle and diet modifications which may have been suggested, you can expect to experience increased energy levels, stronger immune system boosted metabolism, alertness and improved concentration, healthier hair and skin with improved complexion. Those niggling digestive disorders may at last be a thing of the past as you move forward to an improved state of well being, cleansed and informed on how to maintain your optimal health in our stressful modern world.

What is Colonic Irrigation?

Colonics or Colonic Treatment is aimed at assisting the elimination of waste matter from the colon (large intestine) and to improve the muscle tone of the bowel. Colonic Hydrotherapy is a gently and safe solution to help the body eliminate toxins from the system. A flow of warm purified water is used to help flush the colon of accumulated and impacted faecal matter that can build up over time.

Colonic irrigation is sympathetically practiced by trained colonic hyrdotherapists and the utmost discretion is maintained throughout.

Who might have a Colonic & Why?

Although Colonic Hydrotherapy has been around for centuries it has become increasingly popular in recent times due to an increase in media interest highlighting the benefits. The Channel 4 programme - You are What you eat with Dr Gillian McKeith in particular, with other celebrity approval including; Princess Diana, Sarah Ferguson Duchess of York and Kim Wilde.

So whats so important about the colon?

Basically your colon is the most important part of our body when it comes to the state of our general health. It connects the small intestine to the rectum. Everything we eat or drink passes from the stomach to small intestine and then through the five & half feet of the colon or large bowel, as it is commonly known. It is extremely sophisticated as it has many functions. Firstly it passes nutrients through its walls into the blood stream and secondly it prepares and disposes of waste, reclaiming any excess water in the process. Other functions include production and absorption of Vitamin K  as well as a number of B vitamins, also Serotonin an important mood regulator. It produces Digestive enzymes as well as supporting billions of 'normally' friendly bacteria that protect the body. If the colonic walls become clogged up all the vital processes it carries out become less efficient. As a result toxins and other unwanted substances may pass back into the blood stream. Where they are carried to the liver to be filtered out. The harder the liver has to work, the more there can become a back log of toxicity in your circulation. This can lead to symptoms in the form of headaches irritabilty, unhealthy prematuring looking skin. You may feel sluggish lack energy and stamina or feel bloated and experience digestive ailments. Although not life threatening, these problems ignored could lead to more serious health problems.

Colonic Hydrotherapy Procedure

Some people can be nervous and apprehensive when it comes to the actual therapy. After all it involves part of our body and its function that we are generally as a society very private about. This is not a medical procedure it is a complementary detoxifying cleansing therapy. In lay terms it can be described as an internal bath for your colon. The therapy involves using abdominal massage to ease your bowel and stimulate its natural function. Your therapist will work in harmony with your body and you should begin to feel calm and cleansed as all the toxins and wastes are removed during the gentle flushing action of the water working in harmony with your bowel.

Before the procedure begins your therapist will spend time in consultation with you. This is relaxed and informal and is a unique opportunity to discuss your lifestyle diet and health and ways to enhance and improve it.

Following consultation the procedure will be explained after which you will be given time to change and prepare yourself accordingly. Your modesty and dignity will be maintained at all times. There will be no mess or odours as the waste tube directly leads into a wastage outlet.

The speculum is the only piece of equipment that will be introduced into your rectum. It is narrow and will only be introduced 2-3 inches. When this is being carried out (a few seconds) it should not be painful or uncomfortable. The therapist will have attached a water inflow pipe onto the speculum and will follow by attaching the waste pipe on (this also takes a few seconds. Once you feel at ease treatment will commence. This involves allowing warmed water to flow into your bowel via the speculum. Once you become used to the sensation which is likely only to feel "unfamiliar", the therapist will start the gentle flushing. This involves letting the water fill your colon enough that you feel the fllling sensation and then the pressure will be released. At this point the water and waste runs out the waste tube directly into the outflow.

This steady treatment will continue for approximatly 30-40 minutes. During treatment abdominal massage may be carried out at intervals. This is applied to encourage your bowel in its funtion. Most people find this very relaxing. Once treatment is completed you will go to the toilet to empty your bowel of any water/waste that may still be in your colon. Usually 5-10 minutes is all that is necesary. There is usually no urgency in getting to the toilet and you will be in control of your bowels.

Once finished you will rejoin your therapist to discuss how your treatment went. Recommendation/diet sheets will be given as appropriate to you, as well as an after care sheet. You will be able to return to work after your treatment.

Colon hydrotherapy is also useful beyond its detoxifying and cleansing

  • Tones and exercises the colon, improving muscle contraction

  • Iimproves transit time ie how long it takes from eating to defaecation

  • Decreases the risk of cancer

  • Balances the microflora ecosystem(good and bad bacteria)

  • Re-educates the colon and helps it maintain its original form and action

  • Encourages synthesis & absorbtion of certain B vitamins

  • Non habit forming, but encourages healthy normal function

Why colon cleansing is important in our modern world

The human digestive system was designed to grind hard/fresh foods rich in nutrients, fibre, low in calories with a little fish or meat now and again. Our Western diet includes highly processed, cooked, softened and chemically altered foods. The fast pace lifestyle is assisted with convenience foods packed with preservatives and additives. We rush our meals as we anticipate the next thing we have on our to do list, hence eating slowly, chewing our food properly is something we rarely stop to consider and yet it is vital for our digestion.

The UK Has the highest incident of bowel cancer in the world with 20,000 new cases each year.

The UK is the most constipated nation in the world.

One in three people who consult their GP have a bowel related problem.

The healthy transit time of food through the body is less than 24 hours. On average in the UK the transit time in men is 60 hours and 70 in women.
(If we are having less than 2 bowel movements a day food residues are lying in the colon for more than 12 hours, fermenting and putrifying .

Heart disease/obesity/diabetes are also on the increase.

All these conditions we are seeing are unknown in more primitive countries.

The purpose of colonic hydrotherapy is to improve and enhance your well being primarily by improving the function of your digestive system, however the introduction of a healthy diet, exercise, stress management are equally important.

Problems that someone may have colonic irrigation for include;

  • General body detoxification

  • Bowel conditions i.e. IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), chronic constipation, Joggers Bowel, diverticulitis and chronic candida yeast infestation (also called candidaisis or bowel dysbiosis).

  • Conditions considered secondary to poor bowel function e.g. chronic fatigue, headaches, sinusitis, chest & lung complaints (i.e. asthma), poor skin health, recurrent urinary infections.

  • Short term Benefits of colonic treatment are often reported as improved bowel function, clearer skin, mental clarity and fewer headaches. Circulatory, immune and weight problems often also improve with colonic treatment, but are likely to take longer & further treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

I go to the toilet once a day with no problem and I feel healthy won't it make my bowels lazy having colonics?

Healthy people will only enhance their well being. The colonic will keep the bowel clean toned and exercised.

Won't all the good bacteria and nutrients be washed out?

Some will be washed out with the bad bacteria, however it will allow the colon to rebalance its microflora system. Good bacteria will start to repopulate. Following a diet rich in natural yoghurt and other fermented foods, fresh fruit vegetables and grains beneficial bacteria will be preserved and proliferate. Your therapist may recommend taking a probiotic supplement such as acidophilus.

Do I need to prepare myself in any way before treatment?

It's best not to do anything different in your daily routine. The treatment will reflect your current state of health. On treatment day it is advisable to eat light meals and avoid a meal an hour or so before treatment. This is because you will be having abdominal massage during your treatment..

How long will the treatment take?

If it is your first treatment anything between 25-40 minutes it will depend entirely on the individual. The bowel will be exercised ,so like any workout ,enough to feel the benefit but ensure it does not become uncomfortable.

What will it feel like?

Some people feel very positive in taking action for a a healthier approach to their life.Others feel nervous as they anticipate the actual treatment.Your therapist will understand this and will be most reassuring. The more relaxed you are the more sucessful will be the treatment.

People usually find subsequent treatments most enjoyable and relaxing as they are accustomed to the treatment and relate positively to their bowels healthy response to the colonic, as well as feeling better in themselves.

How will I feel afterwards?

The therapist will advice you and you will be given an after care sheet. Generally most people feel fine and could return to work after treatment. As it is a detox treatment it is advisable not to engage in strenous exercise. Relax, eat light, avoiding spicy, rich foods for 48 hours.

If you need to have your bowels open over the next few hours there will not be a sense of urgency, you will be in complete control. On the contrary you may not feel the need to open your bowels for a day or so depending on what was passed during your colonic.

Might I need any further treatments?

For optimum effect usually a short course is advised for most, but it really depends on the individual, their diet, lifestyle, general state of health, etc. To stay on top an occasional maintenance session may be recommended.

The choice of whether you have any further treatments is really up to you!

How many treatments will I need?

This can only be determined after your initial treatment. Only you will know how it made you feel. Your diet and lifestyle in between treatments will play a major role in your self improvement management. A kick start usually involves 2-3 treatments over 2-3 weeks.

Generally healthy people under 30 years need a couple of treatments per year. As you age you may find 3-4 cleanses a year of benefit. Those who live and work "Living the western modern lifestyle" may benefit with 4-8 treatments per year. People with specific problems may benefit over a course ranging over 6-9 weeks.

What about diet and nutritional supplements?

Diet will be assessed and dietary advice given as appropriate.

A course of nutritional and herbal colon cleansing dietary supplements many be advised to aid the cleansing process. These usually include probiotics &/or prebiotics to support the population of 'friendly' gut bacteria and to replace those that get flushed out with the waste. Some nutritional supplements i.e. vitamins, minerals &/or anti-oxidants may be indicated to assist the process and improve general health and where candida overgrowth is suspected, then some antifungal dietary supplements may be advised.

Is the treatment dangerous?

Colonics have been used over centuries.,however as with any treatment or medication you may take there are always risks. The main risks that relate to colonic hydrotherapy are contaminated equipment or water and damage to bowel wall.

Contaminated equipment exposure is minimised when disposable kits are used. Filtered and sterilised water used in therapy reduces contamination risk. Gravity systems used for colonics use very low gravity pressure and 'in-flow' is controlled by your therapist.

At our Holistic centre you can be assurred that a gravity system with ultra violet sterlisation and filtration of water is used as well as disposable kits.

Can anyone have a colonic?

No, some conditions where it is not advisable to have a colonic. Please refer to the list mentioned earlier. Under the 'Typical Conditions' tab.

What's involved in a Colonic Hydrotherapy session?

A detailed case history is taken before any treatment is started to ensure suitability for treatment, likely benefit and to screen for conditions where one would be advised to seek medical assistance. As such, this initial session usually lasts about an hour & half, and further treatments are about an hour.

The warmed, sterilised and purified water is introduced through a special tube into the rectum at a low pressure. This is either from a gravity feed system or precisely regulated low pressure pump. The water is simultaneously allowed to drain out through a relief hole with the waste matter, to maximise flow and minimise any build up of pressure.

The therapist then uses particular massage techniques to the abdominal area to stimulate the release of gas, mucous and impacted waste, enabling the elimination of these toxic materials.
